I really can’t say enough good things about the food scene near Fort Benning. We’ve talked holes in the wall and BBQ until our eyes bled, but I’d like you to join me on this journey to breakfast-ville, if you would. Sure, there are countless places that serve breakfast near Fort Benning. Much like they serve lunch and dinner. But, in this post, I’m highlighting those that not only specialize in breakfast, but also excel at it.
Disclaimer: I was not compensated to review any of these establishments, with the exception of Metro Diner. They sent me a gift certificate to try their food in exchange for an honest review. My terms have always been that if I do not like the food or experience, then I will not provide a review (I like to keep things positive ’round here!).
So, in no particular order, here are my eight favorite breakfast joints in the area:
Metro Diner recently opened its doors in Columbus in late 2017. Their menu is extensive and I actually had a really hard time deciding what I wanted because it all sounded so good! I opted for the crab cake benedict (solid choice). The ‘ol ball and chain ordered the biscuits and gravy and he wiped that plate clean! The vibe here is exciting as you get to watch the cooks in action in the kitchen and at the pass. Did I mention how nice everyone is here? Seriously, some of the best customer service we’ve experienced.
Aside from serving a kicka** breakfast, the décor at Plucked Up is reason enough to go back again and again. Such a cool, spunky place with a menu to match. Fun twists on breakfast classics and Southern favorites. To be perfectly honest, any place with jalapeno jelly on their menu can go ahead and consider themselves my best friend.

You may recognize this place from our top hole-in-the-wall restaurants article, but we’d be remiss not to mention it here as well. If you’re looking for that no-frills, home-cooked, greasy spoon kinda joint, then you’ve hit the jackpot here. This is the mom and pop of all mom and pop establishments. It’s great food at blue-collar prices and I just love it!
This family-owned restaurant in Phenix City, AL serves up some of the best breakfast in the area, and they are very well-known for their omelets. Full disclosure, I haven’t tried their omelets yet because they had eggs benedict on their menu. And if that’s is on the menu then I HAVE to order it…it’s a rule. But I’ve got several friends who’ve had the omelets and they tell me they’re life-changing. I trust them implicitly. Looks like I’ll be making at least one more visit before I PCS!
This establishment has been in business for a looong time. And for good reason. Ruth Ann’s is a local favorite, serving up iconic dishes like Capt’n Crunch French toast. Yerp, you heard me right. That’s Capt’n Crunch cereal crumbled and dusted over your fluffy stack of French toast. It’s a great place to bring the family and they’ve got all the kids’ favorites!
If you haven’t tried My Boulange yet, then what the heck are you doing with your life?! It’s a shwanky French bakery in Uptown that is just to-die-for. But please, only go if you enjoy fresh-baked pastries and delicious lattes. For the full experience, arrive on your retro bicycle fashioned with a basket and grab yourself a mouth-watering Croque Madame (or Monsieur…no judgement here). Then, head back to your brick-walled studio apartment with your arms overflowing with fresh brioche and baguettes. You’ll thank me later.
Nestled off the beaten path in Smiths Station, AL, this home-town gem is everything you know and love about Southern cooking. Biscuits, gravy, country-fried steak, oh my! You can expect all the breakfast staples at reasonable prices along with that wonderful feeling of familiarity where you’re treated like family and everyone knows everyone. I had myself a Western omelet while my better half opted for some country-fried steak and we both walked away happy.
Even though this place is a chain, you won’t notice any decrease in quality control as everything is made to order. They’re all about freshness and healthy food so you’ll see a little bit of everything on their menu along with their nutritional specs. Grab yourself a power bowl if you’re looking for some protein to kick-start your day. Naturally, I opted for the eggs benedict BLT (pictured on the right) and it was friggin amazing!
